Title:
GEORGE LAVINGTON, BISHOP OF EXETER
Description:
Papers relating to Methodism. Most, and probably all, are papers of George Lavington (1684-1762), Bishop of Exeter 1747-62, a leading opponent of the Methodists and Moravians. Many have endorsements in Lavington's hand. The Lavington papers (together with papers of Henry Rimius which had been purchased by Lavington) were acquired by Thomas Secker, Archbishop of Canterbury, after the death of Lavington in 1762 (see Custodial History field). None however are annotated by Secker. ff. 73-74. Letter to Lavington from George Harrison on Lavington's book and measures against the Methodists in Cork. Cork, 27 Aug. 1749.
