Title:
GEORGE LAVINGTON, BISHOP OF EXETER
Description:
Papers relating to Methodism. Most, and probably all, are papers of George Lavington (1684-1762), Bishop of Exeter 1747-62, a leading opponent of the Methodists and Moravians. Many have endorsements in Lavington's hand. The Lavington papers (together with papers of Henry Rimius which had been purchased by Lavington) were acquired by Thomas Secker, Archbishop of Canterbury, after the death of Lavington in 1762 (see Custodial History field). None however are annotated by Secker. ff. 31-32. Extract from the spurious visitation charge of Bishop Lavington to his clergy concerning moral preaching, representing him as a supporter of Methodism. 1748. Two texts, manuscript and printed. f. 31v is endorsed by Lavington: 'All above absolutely false. G. Ex'. In September 1748 Lavington published his disavowal of the text. The manuscript text is printed in Beckerlegge, p. 2 and reproduced between pp. 14 and 15.
