The 'Summa de virtutibus', by Guillaume Peyraud (c.1200-1271?), or Guillelmus Peraldus, or William Peraldus, a Dominican preacher from Lyon. Written around 1248, this was probably the most influential text on the cardinal virtues from the late medieval period. This manuscript of the 'Summa' was written in England. ff. 1r-3v. 'Incipiunt capitula in tractatu de uirtutibus. Presens opus habet v partes principales ... Expliciunt capitula tractatus uirtutum'. ff. 3v-220. 'Incipit tractatus moralis de uirtutibus. Prologus. Cum circa utilia studere debeamus ... celestem hereditatem. Tractatus uirtutum explicit. Benedictus dominus uirtutum qui incepit et compleuit. Amen'.

Binding of black leather over wooden boards, 297 x 230 mm, with metal clasps. Late 19th century. Parchment leaves (ff. 1-220); the remainder paper flyleaves. Folio iii is from an earlier binding. Page size 284 x 215 mm. Written space 190-200 x 120 mm. 41-46 long lines. Collation: 1(10); 2(8); 3-4(10); 5-15(8); 16(10); 17-25(8); 26(12). Initials: (i) red and blue with ornament of both colours; (ii) 3-line, red or dark blue, with ornament of the other colour. Secundo folio 'quadruplex ordinacio'.
