CHINESE NEW TESTAMENT
Subject:
New Testament
Description:
Bible: St. Matthew's Gospel translated into Chinese [by John Lassar, Chinese scholar, an Armenian Christian born at Macao], 1807. For an account of Lassar see 'Christian Observer', 1809, 601.
This translation was made at Serampore, where Lassar was maintained by Claudius Buchanan, Vice-Provost of the college at Fort William, Calcutta, and is described on f. i as 'the first fruits of the Christian Institution in the East'. The Institution was created by Buchanan to disseminate translations of the Scriptures, but had only a short existence. See H. Pearson, Memoirs of Buchanan, 1834, 274-6. The translation of St. Matthew was printed in 1810 (Darlow and Moule 2452).
