Description:
Two works by St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430). This manuscript was probably written in France, but was in England by the 14th century as appears from the script of the marginalia. ff. 1r-170v. St. Augustine, De civitate Dei, each book in numbered chapters and preceded by an unnumbered table of chapters, apparently the usual set. Numerous marginalia of the 14th and early 15th century. f. 171. Blank. ff. 172r-228r. St. Augustine, De Trinitate, each book in numbered chapters and preceded by an unnumbered table of chapters. The lower parts of ff. 227and 228 have been torn off. f. 228v blank.
Description:
Quarter leather binding with boards covered in marbled paper, 336 x 242 mm. 18th century. Vellum leaves (and unnumbered paper flyleaves), 325 x 220 mm. Written space 235 x 165 mm. 2 cols. 48 lines. Foliated 1-56, 58-228. Collation: 1-13(12); 14(14) (ff. 158-71); 15(12); 16 ten; 17-18(12); 19(12) wants 12 blank. Quires 1-11, 15 numbered at the end I-XI, I. Initials: (i) blue and red, with red and violet ornament; (ii) 2-line, red with violet ornament or blue with red ornament; (iii) in the table of chapters, 1-line, blue or red. Secundo folio 'nec succensent'.
