Title:
LADY ANN BLOUNT SONGBOOK
Description:
Music book, containing 29 solo songs in English, French and Italian. The music appears to have been entered at various times, the principal repertory between 1650 and 1660, and a later addition ( ff. 64v-79r) c. 1665-70. All of the songs (except those added later, ff. 64v-79r) have fully written-out accompaniment for theorbo. Many have extensive vocal embellishment. Many of the songs in the repertoire are unique or contain unique variants. The accompaniments, embellishments, and the instructions for thoroughbass realization, suggest that the manuscript served for the instruction of a serious amateur, probably 'The Lady Ann Blount' whose name appears on the first leaf. It is likely that Charles Coleman (see ff. 51v-64r) was her music master.
Description:
ff. 51v-64r. Written by hand three. This is the hand of the composer Charles Coleman, also known as Charles Colman (d. 1664), whose autograph signature is found at f. 56r. Eight English songs, comprising three by Charles Coleman, one by Henry Lawes (1596-1662), one by William Lawes (1602-1645), and three anonymous Italian songs.
